CCNA 2012 And CCENT Practice Exam:
Troubleshooting Scenarios And Commands
By Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933
As I often mention to students, there's no multiple choice on a Cisco router - you either know your stuff or you don't!
In this practice exam, we'll tackle a troubleshooting situation or two - or more - and you'll need to know the command needed to handle the situation.
Let's get started... and when you're done here, head to these other free TBA CCNA and CCENT resources!

1. You need to telnet to a Cisco router to begin your troubleshooting. Assuming the privilege level is at the default, what password or passwords will you need to successfully connect and configure the router?
2. You've been told the router you're working on was last reloaded 5 days ago, but you're a little suspicious of that story. What command will show you how long it's been since the last reload, along with the reason for that reload?
3. You're called in to t-shoot a router that's serving as an OSPF DR for several different segments. You're concerned the CPU is overloaded. What command will show you the CPU stats you need to make this determination?
4. You're going to connect to a Cisco router via Hyperterminal. What are the five required values you should enter in Hyperterminal for the following?
BPS
data bits
parity
stop bits
flow control / no flow control
5. You suspect there's a problem with the TCP/IP install on a PC. What's the first IP address you should ping to check the install?

Here are the answers!
1. You'll need to know two passwords - the VTY password in order to connect, and the enable secret or enable password in order to enter enable mode.
2. show version isn't just to see what the config register is set to - you can also see the time elapsed since the last time the router was bounced, and why it bounced. (It won't tell you who did it, though. Sorry.)
3. show process will display the CPU usage statistics.
4. Hyperterminal settings: 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
5. Just ping 127.0.0.1 - if you can't ping that, TCP/IP is not installed correctly.
