Question 1:

What command will create a static route that will route packets to only 2.2.2.2 and no other destination?

The next hop IP address for that path is 172.12.123.1, the remote router's Ethernet2 interface.

Question 2:

What command will create a static route that will send traffic destined for the 100.1.1.0 /24 network to a next-hop IP address of 172.2.2.2 ?

Assume the remote router will receive packets on its Serial3 interface.

Question 3:

What letter and/or symbol combination indicates a static host route?

Question 4:

What is the full command to disable every single one of your currently running debugs?

Question 5:

Name two routing loop prevention mechanisms built into Distance Vector protocols and briefly describe each.

Question 6:

In a RIP configuration, what value(s) can follow this command?

R2(config-router)#network 10.0.0.0

A. The subnet mask

B. The wildcard mask

C. The administrative distance of this network

D. The network mask

E. Nothing - literally!

Question 7:

What RIP-based command will hardcode each RIP-enabled interface on the router to send and accept only updates that support VLSM?

Question 8:

What command will show only the RIP-discovered routes in a routing table?

Question 9:

What's the destination address for RIP version 1 updates?

Question 10:

What's the destination address for RIP version 2 updates?

The answers are just below this brief and important message!

Answers:

1. Use the ip route command to create this static route:

ip route 2.2.2.2 255.255.255.255 172.12.123.1

The mention of the remote router's E2 interface is a red herring, as the ip route command will never refer to the interface name of the remote router - only the local router.

A route that leads to one and only one specific destination is sometimes called a host route.

2. ip route 100.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 172.2.2.2

3. A static host route is indicated by the same symbol that indicates (almost) any static route - "S".

4. That's undebug all, or as I like to call one popular abbreviation, "u all".

5. Split horizon prevents a route from being advertised via the same interface upon which it was learned; route poisoning is the continued advertising of a route that is no longer available, although this advertisement will advertise the route as being unreachable.

6. No options follow network 10.0.0.0 in a RIP configuration. That's literally all you can enter.

7. Since only version 2 of RIP supports VLSM, we'd use the version 2 command under the RIP configuration.

8. show ip route rip.

9. The destination for RIP v1 updates is 255.255.255.255, since those packets are broadcasts.

10. The destination for the multicast RIPv2 updates is 224.0.0.9.
