CCNA And CCENT Flash Card Practice Exam:

ARP And DHCP

By Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933

Without ARP and DHCP working correctly -- well, we're not going to have much of a network!

Here's a CCNA and CCENT practice exam for you on these important topics - and with (almost) no choices given, it's a little tougher than usual!

I post at least four new CCNA exams a week on my CCNA Practice Exam page, so bookmark that page - and let's get started!

1. Of the following devices, which is most likely to run "proxy ARP"?

Router

Switch

Hub

Repeater

2. Of ARP Requests and ARP responses, which are broadcasts?

3. Of the four major DHCP message types, which are broadcasts?

4. Of those same four DHCP message types, which are unicasts?

5. And while we're on this very important topic, what's the order of those four message types?

Answers right after this brief, important message!

And now -- the answers!

1. Proxy ARP is necessary when an ARP Request can't be forwarded - and the only one of those devices that has trouble with that is a router.

2. The ARP Request mentioned in the previous answer is a broadcast - that's why the router can't forward it. ARP Responses are unicasts.

3. The DHCP Discover and Request messages are both broadcasts. (They're also both sent by the host requesting an IP address.)

4. The DHCP Offer and Ack messages are unicasts. They're also both sent by DHCP servers.

5. The order:

Host sends DHCP Discover

Server(s) send DHCP Offer

Host sends DHCP Request

Server whose offer was accepted sends DHCP Ack
