CCNA 2012 Practice Exam:

"What Is Truth?"

From Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933

"The Computer Certification Bulldog"

That's a pretty deep title for a CCNA practice exam, I admit, but if you don't know this material, you might be deep in something else!

In today's practice exam, just identify the true statements. That's it!

Be sure to take advantage of these other TBA CCNA and CCENT training resources...

... and right now, let's get started with today's practice exam!

1. What is true of access ports on a Cisco switch?

A. Can be connected to a host device (PC, etc)

B. Generally connected to another switch

C. Can act as a trunk port

D. Cannot serve as a trunk port

2. What is true of ISL?

A. Is primarily a trunking protocol

B. Protocol that advertises VLANs across a trunk

C. Is Cisco-proprietary

D. Greater overhead than IEEE 802.1q

E. Generally has less overhead than dot1q

F. Utilizes the native vlan concept

3. What is true of a root bridge?

A. It will have no root ports

B. It has root ports (that's why they call it a root switch)

C. Elected by having a higher priority than other contending switches

D. Will have the lowest priority of all contending switches

E. If priority is a tie, MAC address is the deciding factor

F. Switch RID is the deciding factor if the priority is the same

4. What is true of VLANs?

A. Creating VLANs results in fewer broadcast domains, and therefore fewer broadcast storms

B. They help to limit the scope of broadcast traffic

C. Allows you to create logical port groups

D. Unused VLANs are a security feature

E. Default VLAN is VLAN 0

F. Default native VLAN is VLAN 0

"You are the reason I'm a CCNA today!" - Paul Laudenslager

Let's get to those answers!

1. (A, D). Access ports will be ports connected to a single host, and they can't serve as trunk ports.

2. (A, C, D). ISL is a Cisco-proprietary trunking protocol that does not use the native VLAN concept, which in turn results in greater overhead than dot1q.

Because ISL doesn't use the native VLAN, every single frame sent across the trunk will be encapsulated.

3. (A, D, E). The root bridge will actually have no root ports, it is elected by having the lowest priority of all contending switches, and if the priority is a tie, the MAC address is the deciding factor. (Lowest wins there, too.)

4. (B, C, D). VLANs do help to limit the scope of broadcast traffic, but they do so by allowing you to create more broadcast domains, not fewer.

VLANs also allow you to logically group ports, and an unused VLAN can be used to help secure your network.
