Routing Fundamentals and Virtual Links
By Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933
Nailing the CCNP ROUTE and TSHOOT exams and succeeding in your career is all about the fundamentals.
A lot of fundamentals.
Let's sharpen your skills on these important details...
... and when you're done with this practice exam, be sure to take advantage of the three free hours of CCNP Video Boot Camp training linked on this page!
That's right - I said three hours. Don't miss it.
Let's get to the questions!
1. You've written the following static route:
ip route 3.3.3.3 255.255.255.255 serial0 155
Under what circumstances will that route appear in the routing table?
A. Under any circumstances, since static routes are always considered superior to dynamically discovered routes.
B. Under no circumstances, since the syntax is incorrect.
C. If the same route currently in the table is an OSPF route.
D. If the same route in the table now is an internal EIGRP route.
E. If the same route to that destination is an external EIGRP route.
2. The use of "On-Demand Routing" requires what common protocol or service to run on the same router?
A. EIGRP
B. Local database name lookup
C. CDP
D. Etherchannels (Layer 2)
E. Etherchannels (Layer 3)
3. What's the AD of an EIGRP summary route?
4. Which of the following traffic types is NOT forwarded by default when the ip helper-address command is in effect?
A. port 37
B. port 53
C. port 69
D. port 138
E. port 512
5. When you write the command to create an OSPF virtual link, you'll include one IP address. What IP address value should that be?
A. The remote router's closest interface
B. The remote router's OSPF RID
C. The local router's interface through which the OSPF adjacency is formed
D. The local router's OSPF RID
E. The virtual router's SVI interface
F. The virtual router's OSPF RID

Here are the answers!
1. (E). That's a floating static route, and since it has an AD of 155, it would not replace the same route discovered by OSPF (AD of 110) or internal EIGRP (AD of 90).
It would, however, replace the same route discovered by external EIGRP (170).
2. (C). To run ODR, you have to have CDP running.
3. The AD of an EIGRP summary route is 5.
4. (E). Port numbers aren't always easy to remember! The first four ports are forwarded by the ip helper-address command:
TIME - port 37
DNS - port 53
TFTP - port 69
NetBIOS datagram service - port 138
The remaining port in that question, BIFF (port 512), is not forwarded by the ip helper-address command by default.
5. (B). When configuring an OSPF virtual link, the address you'll specify is the remote router's OSPF RID.
