CCNP SWITCH Practice Exam:
The Dreaded Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
From Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933
There's a new CCNP practice exam here on the site every day - and here's a five-question practice exam on STP to help you get ready for success on the 642-813 CCNP SWITCH exam!
You'll find the answers at the bottom of the page!
When you're done here, be sure to visit my main CCNP SWITCH Tutorial and Video page for plenty of additional help in passing this demanding certification -- and the Bulldog Blog has exam links every single day!
Now let's get started!
1. Which of the following are true of the root port cost?
A. locally significant only
B. is a static value that cannot be changed
C. increments as BPDU enters the switch
D. increments as BPDU leaves the switch
2. Identify the true statements regarding UDLD.
A. Is generally used to detect one-way links
B. Runs in "normal" and "aggressive" modes
C. Is a protocol generally used to create Etherchannels
D. Is commonly used on L2 switches rather than L3 switches
3. Which of the following is true of Uplinkfast?
A. Increases STP port cost
B. Descreases STP port cost
C. Has no effect on STP port cost
D. When implemented, should be run on all switches in network
E. When used, should be run on root bridges only
F. Generally should not be used on root bridges
4. What Cisco switch feature can assist in problems getting DHCP to assign addresses to hosts in a timely fashion?
A. Backbonefast
B. Portfast
C. Uplinkfast
D. BPDU Skewing
5. Describe the action taken by a port running Root Guard if an inferior BPDU is received on that port.

Let's get to those answers!
1. (A, C). The STP port cost is locally significant only in that it's not advertised to any other switches, and the overall port cost increments as the BPDU enters the switch.
2. (A, B). UDLD is used to detect one-way links - that's why we call it the UniDirectional Link Detection protocol. :) The options for UDLD are normal and aggressive.
3. (A, F). Uplinkfast will increase port costs on the involved switches - and the root switch will not be one of those switches. Actually, the root switch won't even allow you to enable Uplinkfast.
4. (B). Since Portfast allows a switch port to skip a couple of STP phases, a host connected to that port will be able connect to the network quicker than it would without Portfast - and that includes getting an address from DHCP in a timely fashion.
5. Root Guard will take no action when an inferior BPDU is received. When a superior BPDU is received, though, the port will go into root-inconsistent state.
