Cisco CCNP Certification Training:
A Look At The New BCMSN 642-812 Exam

The good news: Cisco CCNP certification is about to become more valuable.
The bad news: Cisco CCNP certification is about to get a lot harder to earn!
Overall, the changes to the CCNP certification exams are good changes. The BCRAN and CIT exams are being replaced by exams much more applicable to today's networks; the BSCI exam is being updated to include IPv6 and multicasting; finally, the Building Converged Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) exam is getting a much-needed update as well. Let's take a look at the changes as we move from 642-811 to 642-812.
Cisco Raises The Bar On CCNP Certification
Cisco's exam blueprint indicates three major additions to the BCMSN exam - wireless access, voice, and security. Anyone working with today's networks knows that these are three vital topics, and Cisco's reflecting that with the updated BCMSN exam. For wireless, CCNP certification candidates should be ready for questions on WLANs (Wireless LANs) and configuration of wireless clients.
Security wasn't ignored on the 642-811 exam - network security topics on that exam included port security and 802.1x, and the CCNP certification candidate should expect to see them on the 642-812 exam as well. Additionally, you'll need to know about different attacks on your network that can occur at Layer 2, including VLAN Hopping and DHCP Spoofing.
There was a little voice on the 642-811 BCMSN as well, but there's quite a bit more to know for the new exam. CCNP certification candidates should know more about Voice VLANs, IP Phone configuration, and voice QoS. As Voice becomes more and more popular in today's networks, you'll need to know as much voice QoS as you can!
